What types of businesses is the Sprint Accelerator focusing on?

How are the final ten companies chosen? What are the Criteria?

The Sprint Accelerator is looking for focused, well-rounded companies with strong, thoughtful ideas, and an ability to execute.

What role is Sprint going to play in the Sprint Accelerator and what commitment has Sprint made?

Sprint wants to leverage their capabilities and broad partner relations to help startups create the future of mobile health.

What are the networking and educational opportunities provided during the three months?

Techstars will organize a variety of personal and group opportunities with mentors, entrepreneurs, angel investors, legal experts, venture capitalists, investment bankers, as well as others in a variety of forums.

Will all the mentors come from Sprint?

While Sprint will contribute some mentors, most mentors will be entrepreneurs and investors who are interested in building businesses across mobile health. Techstars will be leveraging their extensive network of mentors to support the program.

What if my company is not an expert in mobile health?

The Sprint Accelerator is focused on bringing all of the resources and mentors to help create new applications, products, and services into one place to mix with the drive of entrepreneurs. Sprint and Techstars will provide design and technical assistance, guidance, and mentorship on your products, prototypes, and sales pitches, but each company in the Sprint Accelerator must be capable of building their own solution.

Do I need to have a mobile only product to participate?

No, we are looking for strong companies that are building innovative products and / or services in the mobile and health space. If you do not have a mobile component, but currently only have a service in the health space, we are still interested in hearing from you.

Do these companies have to stay in Kansas City when the program ends after 3 months?

No, you are free to move your company to any location you wish after the program. Or, you can stay in the same space as the accelerator. Techstars uses Pivotdesk to lease out short-term space to companies who wish to stay in the same location for a short period of time. Of course, at the discretion of Sprint.

FUNDING

How can participants receive funding after the Sprint Accelerator ends?

Near the end of the three-month program, there will be a private Demo Day where Sprint executives and clients, as well as angel investors, venture capitalists and influential industry leaders from around the world will listen to pitches from the start-ups and decide on which to fund.

Does Sprint retain equity in the Sprint Accelerator companies?

Sprint is funding the convertible debt note that is available to each company accepted in the program. Each company has the option of taking this convertible note. If you do decide to take the additional funding, then Sprint will share in the equity of the company.

Why does Techstars get stock in these companies?

Sprint brings their depth of mobile experience, industry connections and business acumen to the program. But Sprint is not a seed investment firm, Techstars has deep experience both managing accelerators and supporting founders after the program with the Techstars Founder Network. Techstars is investing in each of the companies selected to this program. Techstars retains 6% of the equity for each company and it’s Techstars on the cap table. So, you get the best of both worlds, the deep experience and acumen of Sprint joined with the seed funding and operating experience of Techstars.

Will Sprint invest in my company?

The Accelerator model gives you the opportunity to pitch investors, venture capitalists, influential industry leaders and Sprint executives and clients at the end of the program during Investor and Demo Day. As a benefit of participating in the program, each company will receive $20,000 as well as hosting services, work space, connections and deep mentorship. In addition companies accepted to the program have the option to accept a $100,000 convertible debt note. This provides even more resources for you to get your ideas off the ground.

What guarantees can Sprint make to companies who get into the program?

Sprint will support the Accelerator with facilities, mentors, visibility, and pro-active engagement around business opportunities that emerge from this program. Sprint is focused on creating a developer ecosystem around mobile health and the companies in this accelerator have a unique and compelling opportunity to engage in this ecosystem. Sprint has no obligation or restrictions with regard to the companies it contracts with and the products and services that it develops or offers.

How detailed does my idea need to be in the application?

In this initial application process, we ask applicants to describe market opportunity, the team, the idea and how to execute. We openly discourage applicants from submitting their business plans or “secret sauce.”

Does Sprint retain the intellectual property (IP) developed during the Sprint Accelerator?

No, Sprint does not retain IP exclusively developed by the participating companies during the program. The IP exclusively developed by a participating company is retained by that company.
